Coney Island Hot Dog Sauce

Coney Island Hot Dog Sauce

I got this recipe from Tina over at Mommy's kitchen http://www.mommyskitchen.net.  I messed around with the recipe somewhat to make it to suit my taste.  I served it with Whole Wheat Hot Dog Buns (90 calories each), Hebrew National 97% Fat Free Beef Hot Dogs (40 calories each) and Grass Finished Ground Beef from Truth Hill Farm.

Coney Island Hot Dog Sauce

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons butter

1  lbs ground beef

1 large onion, minced

3 clove garlic, minced

2 tablespoons chili powder

1 tablespoon prepared mustard

1 (6 oz) can tomato paste

1 1/2 cups water

3 tablespoons brown sugar

Several dashes Worcestershire

Salt, pepper, garlic pepper, garlic powder and seasoning salt to taste

Instructions:I browned my meat on medium high heat with the chopped onions first in about 1 1/2 cups of water in a Cast Iron Skillet. Once the meat was browned I used my Pampered Chef chopper to chop the onion and meat to a very fine consistency.
My meat was extremely lean so I did not need to drain it, however; if you are using ground meat with a higher fat content you will probably want to drain (and possibly rinse) your meat.
Add the garlic and cook for a couple minutes.  Add all remaining ingredients.
Lower heat to low and just simmer for about 45 minutes.

I like to taste the meat after about 15 minutes and add additional seasoning if necessary.
